URGENT APPEAL FOR EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

On February 6th, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 occurred in the Pazarcik district of the city of Maraş in Northern Kurdistan. Subsequently, there was a second earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 in the Nurdagi district in Dilok and a third earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 in the Islahiye district in Dilok. These severe earthquakes primarily affected the cities of Amed, Malatya, Urfa, Semsur, Dilok, Elbistan, and many other regions in Northern Kurdistan, as well as the cities of Adana, Hatay, Kilis, Osmaniye, and Kayseri in Turkey, and the regions of Cizre, Euphrat, and Shehba in the north and east of Syria. The earthquake also affected neighboring countries. As a result of the earthquake, hundreds of citizens lost their lives, and thousands were injured. Thousands of people were trapped under the rubble. Many houses and buildings were destroyed, and the winter conditions made rescue efforts difficult. As the Kurdish Red Crescent, we expressed our deep sorrow for the people who lost their lives due to the earthquake. In line with our duty and responsibility, our organization decided to provide assistance to the earthquake victims as soon as possible. The Kurdish Red Crescent collected only financial support and met with families in urgent need of help. On this basis, we called on the Kurds and all our friends in Europe and abroad to support the earthquake victims through the Kurdish Red Crescent.

Information about a Donation of Goods

While we deeply feel the burning pain of our people and respect efforts for solidarity, Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê Switzerland continues its work with years of experience in solidarity and mutual aid. In the initial acute phase of a disaster, the most effective assistance is in the form of cash. This is the best way to support our people in these difficult days. Based on the experiences during the earthquake in Van, it is known that relief goods can be blocked or confiscated, and unfortunately, we have already heard of similar practices from those in need. Another issue is that relief goods can be damaged on the roads and cannot be transported quickly. Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê can immediately reach those in need with financial assistance, which is sent to locally organized aid networks. Based on our experience, this is the most helpful approach in the early days following a disaster. Therefore, we ask our people and friends to participate in the emergency cash campaign and spread the word among your circles. Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê will organize your assistance to reach our people as soon as possible. It’s time to act as quickly as possible; it’s time to be in solidarity! Sharing alleviates our pain. Solidarity is a necessity for building a society!
